Tunisia: Qair Awarded 300 MW for Two Solar Projects in Khobna and Gafsa

Tunis, January 22, 2025 Renewable energy company Qair has been awarded c. 300 MW in Tunisia for the development of two solar projects located in Khobna (198 MWp) and Gafsa (100 MWp). This achievement marks a significant step forward in supporting Tunisia’s ambitious renewable energy objectives and solidifying Qair’s position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions in Africa.

The Khobna and Gafsa projects are part of a broader tender launched by the Tunisian Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy, which seeks to implement solar photovoltaic initiatives totaling 500 MW as a first phase of an extensive plan to generate 1,700 MW of renewable energy through concession agreements.

Driving Positive Impact by 2027 in Tunisia

Once operational, all projects under this tender—including those spearheaded by Qair—are set to have significant contributions to Tunisia’s energy landscape by 2027. They are expected to generate approximately 1,000 GWh of electricity annually, representing about 5% of Tunisia’s national electricity generation.

They will also help save around 250,000 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) of natural gas per year, valued at approximately $125 million, while reducing annual electricity generation costs by an estimated $70 million.

Beyond economic benefits, these projects will foster regional development by creating jobs and contribute to sustainability by avoiding roughly 500,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Building Momentum: Qair Marks a Second Milestone in Tunisia’s Renewable Energy Drive

This latest achievement comes just one month after the official inauguration of Qair’s Feriana project in the Kasserine governorate, which construction began in mid-2024. Developed in partnership with Mazarine Energy, the two 10 MWp photovoltaic farms will produce 44 GWh annually, supplying clean electricity to 30,000 households while reducing CO₂ emissions by 17,000 tonnes each year. The project is set to be commissioned in February 2025.

Qair is honored to contribute to Tunisia’s renewable energy future. The projects in Khobna and Gafsa exemplify our commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions that deliver economic, environmental, and societal benefits. This milestone underscores the trust placed in us by the country’s authorities and stands as a testament to the dedication and expertise of our local employees, who have worked tirelessly over the years to support Tunisia’s renewable energy transition. We are proud to play a role in diversifying the country’s energy mix and advancing its sustainability goalssaid Eric Boutemy, Managing Director at Qair Tunisia.

Qair sets sights on becoming a key player in Africa’s renewable energy future

Building on this awarding of nearly 300 MW in Tunisia, Qair is reinforcing its ambitions to expand across the African continent, with a goal of increasing its installed capacity from 65 MW to 500 MW by 2030. With ongoing projects and a robust development pipeline in Morocco, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mauritius, and Seychelles, the Group is steadily advancing its footprint in Africa.
