Qair Secures First Planning Approval for 50 MW Battery Energy Storage Project in the UK

Paris, France – July 10, 2025 – Independent renewable energy company Qair has received planning permission for a 49.9 MW standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This milestone marks Qair’s first consented standalone BESS project in the UK, marking a significant step in establishing its presence in the country’s growing clean energy sector.

The newly approved project builds on Qair’s expanding UK footprint, following the successful consent of over 140 MW of solar capacity across the country in the past 18 months.

Unlocking Europe’s Energy Storage Potential

Battery energy storage systems are rapidly becoming a cornerstone of Europe’s transition to net zero. According to the European Market Monitor on Energy Storage (EMMES 9.0), Europe’s total storage capacity grew to 89 GW by the end of 2024, and is expected to add another 128 GW by 2030, driven by the need for grid balancing, ancillary services, and improved security of supply. The UK remains one of the most attractive BESS markets in Europe, thanks to favorable regulations, a mature grid, and strong investor interest.

Qair’s Expanding BESS Portfolio in Europe

Qair is actively developing a pan-European battery storage pipeline of about 17 GWh, with more than 800 MWh already secured in Poland and additional projects progressing in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Romania and the UK. These projects are strategically located to support renewable integration, leverage local market incentives, and contribute to energy independence and resilience. With the UK approval, Qair reaffirms its ambition to play a key role in shaping Europe’s clean energy future through flexible, storage-enabled infrastructure, to offer highly adaptable and tailored energy solutions to its customers across the continent.
